IDC's recent study on wearables suggests the market is headed in the right direction: Wearables grew 223 percent from the same quarter last year. Despite those numbers, some solution providers have expressed doubt over the staying power of smartwatches and trackers.

"It's almost like a fad to me, it seems," said Reisterstown, Md.-based security company Raven Data Technologies Co-Founder Matt Johnson.

F1 Solutions CEO James VanderWier predicts the initial buzz over wearables will die down, but that small, smart devices are the solution end users want.

"I think some of it's a fad," said VanderWier. "It's gonna peak, and then it's gonna wane quite a bit. But I think it's also definitely here to stay. We're trying to miniaturize our phones; we're trying to miniaturize everything we have and have that communication without having to lug this clunky equipment around."

Alpharetta, Ga.-based Meriwether-Woods owner David Meriwether said he believes the wearables market needs to release the right device to really get a hook into the industry.

"We see new ideas that just aren't necessarily ready yet. I've tried some of them myself and they all have frustrations, and I end up abandoning them. But I think the concept is there," he said.

But Scottsdale, Ariz.-based iT1 Source's Richard Fly firmly believes wearables are the future.

"I think it's just the next iteration of technology," he said.
