Demo: Apple CarPlay

A decade ago Apple transformed the smartphone business, and now it has its sights on the automotive dashboard. Apple’s new CarPlay has transformed the on-board computer system in modern cars with a simple, familiar user interface.

CarPlay connects with a user’s iPhone through a USB. Once the phone has connected, a streamlined interface comes up with the familiar grid of bubble-box shaped applications, which include hands-free phone and messaging apps, music and podcasts.

Navigation systems will be a thing of the past, as CarPlay integrates Apple Maps. However, users can also download any iOS app they please, so it would be possible to use the popular Waze or Google Maps.

Apple CarPlay can be controlled through voice-activated Siri as well, eliminating further distraction from the road. CarPlay is in many 2016 model vehicles, CRNtv received a demonstration from Honda inside a 2016 Honda Civic. All 2017 Honda vehicles will come equipped with Apple CarPlay, but only Civics and Accords will include the feature in 2016 models.
