Fujitsu Targets Edge With New 1 Gigabit Ethernet Switches

Long known for its play in the 10 Gigabit Ethernet space, Fujitsu Computer Products of America on Tuesday launched a new set of switches that jumps down to the 1 Gigabit Ethernet level with a 10 Gigabit migration path built in.

The new combined 1 Gigabit/10 Gigabit aggregated switch series will start shipping early next month, building on Fujitsu's three-and-a-half-year legacy in the switching game.

"10 Gigabit Ethernet migration hasn't gone as quickly as anyone has hoped or has expected," said Jim Preasmyer, director of sales and business development for Fujitsu's advanced technology group.

Many companies have networks that are still 1 Gigabit, Preasmyer said, and they have not yet made the jump to 10 Gigabit Ethernet.

With that in mind, Fujitsu rolled out two 1 Gigabit/10 Gigabit combination switches, one 24-port 1 Gigabit with a dual port 10 Gigabit uplink card and a 48-port 1 Gigabit switch with two dual port 10 Gigabit uplink card slots, the XG0224 and XG0448, respectively.

Preasmyer said the XG switching line offers swift throughput, low latency and low failure rates in a 1U pizza box form factor. Adding 1 Gigabit Ethernet to the fold boosts Fujitsu's position in the switching space. Preasmyer said releasing 1 Gigabit RJ45 switches for the edge that offer 10 Gigabit Ethernet uplink slots to the core was necessary as companies look to transition to 10 Gigabit.

"The fact is, the 1 Gigabit market still exists," he said, adding that VARs can access the new switches through their distributors.

The new switches carry an MSRP of $2,400 for the 24-port model and $4,400 for the 48-port model. The 10 Gigabit Ethernet uplink cards run an additional $600 each.
