Polycom RealPresence Mobile Now Set For Smartphones

The launch is the next phase of Polycom's emerging mobile video strategy, which kicked off last fall with RealPresence Mobile for Apple, Motorola and Samsung tablets. Polycom in recent months has sought to broaden what it can bring partners and customers for mobile video, mobile UC, services revenue and software integration.
Through RealPresence Mobile, users can connect to standards-based immersive video rooms, group systems, desktop systems, and video calls on laptops, tablets and other smartphones using their own smartphone and the app.

"Polycom's vision is to make video collaboration ubiquitous by delivering easy-to-use, standards-based software to anyone on any device," Andy Miller, Polycom CEO, said in a statement. "Customers want to collaborate from anywhere, and RealPresence video solutions make that possible by seamlessly connecting people face to face who are on the road, at home or in the office, in conference rooms or in immersive theaters."
RealPresence Mobile will be available as a free download for Apple iPhone 4S from Apple's App Store. The product will be available with basic point-to-point connectivity without requiring a Polycom license, but the full-featured collaboration version will require a Polycom CMA license.
In addition to the smartphone launch, Polycom added features to RealPresence Mobile for iPad 2, including the ability to share PDF files over video.
RealPresence Mobile for smartphones was one of several announcements Polycom made in line with this week's Mobile World Congress conference in Barcelona. Polycom also said it has partnered with Ericsson to launch interoperable, HD, Video-as-a-Service and UC service to business users.
The offering combines Ericsson's IP Multimedia Subsystem with Polycom RealPresence video and voice endpoints. Service providers can leverage the combined service bundle to provide Video-as-a-Service or Ericsson's solution for UC, the Ericsson Business Communication Suite. Polycom said customer trials of the combined solution will begin this summer, with general availability expected at the end of 2012.
