Cisco's new plan for Jabber, its software for embedding access to Cisco UC functions into various client devices and operating systems, is a potential game-changer, according to SOS CEO Gia McNutt.

Cisco said at its Partner Summit 2012 that Jabber will be made available at no additional license cost for customers that are already using Cisco Unified Communications Manager. In an interview with CRN, McNutt said it's an exciting development for Cisco and shows the networking giant is recommitting itself to UC growth.

McNutt said the announcement also came at "the perfect time" for Cisco and its partners because the UC space is becoming more competitive, particularly around Microsoft's competing UC collaboration platform, Lync. She also said she's seen positive results from Cisco's restructuring this year after the vendor's tumultuous 2011.

For more on SOS' take on Cisco and UC, watch the full interview with McNutt.
