Mitel Tuesday tapped Joe Vitalone, former vice president of channel management at ShoreTel, as its new executive vice president of sales for the Americas.

Vitalone's appointment comes less than a week after he departed ShoreTel, which is a direct competitor of Mitel's in the unified communications space.

According to Mitel, Vitalone will be responsible for growing the company's sales revenue in North America, the Caribbean and Latin America and for building relationships with Mitel channel partners in each of these three regions.

Vitalone will report directly to Mitel CEO Richard McBee.

"I am thrilled that Joe Vitalone is joining Mitel. His proven track record of revenue growth combined with his channel expertise and strong partnering abilities align perfectly with Mitel's strategic direction," McBee said in a statement. "Joe knows our company and our customers and is ideally placed to help us drive Mitel to the next level of growth."

Vitalone's departure from ShoreTel came less than a year after he rejoined the company in May 2012. He left ShoreTel in 2009 to take on a role as vice president of sales at LifeSize Communications. When he rejoined ShoreTel last year, he was tasked with growing channel revenue and overseeing partner relationships.

During his first run at ShoreTel, from 2005 to 2009, Vitalone was vice president of North American sales. With more than 25 years of direct and indirect sales experience, Vitalone also has held executive-level roles at Polycom, CoVi Technologies and AT&T Wireless.

ShoreTel said last week that Charles "Chuck" Krogman, vice president of advanced applications at ShoreTel, will be taking over Vitalone's responsibilities in the interim.
