Skyworks Introduces New Switches For Internet Of Things

Wireless networking company Skyworks Solutions expanded its family of RF switches to include a line specifically developed for the Internet of Things.

The new switches support large rates of data, "broad frequency ranges," and also withstand high temperatures. In embedded smart energy and lighting applications, temperatures can reach as high as 105 degrees Celsius (221 degrees Fahrenheit).

Skyworks has made a name for itself focusing on developing chips for smartphones, but the company also develops solutions around wireless infrastructure, smart energy, power management, and precision analog components for wireless transmission.

’We’re No. 1 in the world in connectivity in smartphones, including 2G, 3G and 4G connectivity, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth,’ said Skyworks CTO Peter Gammel.

Gammel said the company’s foray into Internet of Things-specific switches is a natural progression for the company.

’You see, Nest thermostats, drop-cam wireless routers, connected light bulbs, smart watches all use the same hardware for connectivity,’ Gammel said.

The switches, which are labeled SKY13587-378LF and SKY13588-460LF, are currently available for sampling and production.
