Lexmark Adds Five Enterprise MFPs

Lexmark International has rolled out five enterprise multifunction laser printers incorporating a new document-accounting engine that eliminates the need for PCs to handle that task.

The embedded solution, which Lexmark calls its Embedded Solutions Framework (eSF), is included in the new monochrome printers and can be added to models introduced in June 2005.

The document-accounting function was built through a joint development agreement with Rochester, N.Y.-based Pharos Systems International using that company's UniPrint software. The Java-based application provides reports on print, copy, fax and scanning usage of each device to help provide better control and lower costs, says Jim Webb, Lexmark's director of channel solutions.

"It's very easy for our solution providers to deploy, and it's a great, low-cost solution for the end-user community," Webb says. In addition to being offered with Lexmark's new MFPs, the function will be offered in all future laser printers, he adds.

The new printers also offer a new auto-sensing capability that can automatically detect batch jobs where originals are different sizes, the ability to handle large scanning jobs (more than than 50 pages) and a new eTask interface--the touch-screen display on the systems used to input information. The color interface is larger, about the size of a GPS display found in cars, says Sharon Brindley, Lexmark's vice president of U.S. channels.

The five new printers are the X644e, X646dte, X850e, X852e and X854e. All offer enterprise-level security features, such as secure user encryption and disk wiping, as well as support for IPSec, SSL, SNMPv3 and 802.1x security protocols. The X644e and X646dte are 50-ppm printers with the color touch interface; they carry an estimated street price of $2,499 and $3,449, respectively. The latter offers a duplexing capability and hard drive.

The other three printers support A3 tabloid paper, offer preview functionality and allow up to 3,100 sheets of paper capacity. The X850e, a 35-ppm MFP, has an estimated street price of $8,899. The X852e offers 45 ppm and costs $9,899; the X854e offers 55 ppm and costs $11,099.

Separately, Lexmark unveiled the E120n monochome laser printer. Priced at $149, it prints at speeds of up to 20 ppm.
