3Com To Roll Out Security Program

Security Advantage, an expansion of the networking hardware vendor's embedded firewall training, provides security training, certification and discounts to 3Com channel partners in the United States and Canada, said Elesh Kadakia, 3Com's security solutions manager.

3Com has been offering its partners training, certification and additional discounts on its embedded firewall product for the past year, but the new program expands the benefits across all of 3Com's security offerings, Kadakia said.

"Security up to now has been viewed as detached from networking, but it is integral to networking, so we are extending the program to cover the entire network," he said.

The Security Advantage program is the first of several new Focus Advantage programs 3Com plans to introduce this summer to partners enrolled in 3Com's Focus Partner Program.

To join the program, solution providers' salespeople must go through training, and engineers must be trained and certified in 3Com security products. Hands-on training classes for security products are set to begin in June, 3Com said. Partners with trained and certified staff are then eligible for an additional 5 percent discount on security hardware products and an additional 10 percent discount on security software.

Products eligible for the program include 3Com's embedded firewall, a firewall embedded onto PCI cards for desktops and servers and PC cards for laptops; the SuperStack 3 Firewall; 3Com OfficeConnect firewalls; and 3Com Network Supervisor Advanced Package, a management application that includes support for 802.1x network login, identification of RADIUS servers and VLAN support.

Shaun Steel, an account manager at Valcom Computer Center, said the Salt Lake City-based solution provider will pursue the additional certifications. Steel, who heads up Valcom's networking practice, said his company's government and education clients are expressing more interest in security solutions. "We're excited that 3Com is increasing its focus on security."
