NetScreen, Trend Micro Expand Partnership

Plans call for the partnership's first product to be a multifunction, integrated security gateway appliance for enterprise remote offices and telecommuters, the companies said. The appliance is slated to combine antivirus, firewall, VPN and intrusion prevention and to be based on NetScreen's new 5GT platform, also announced on Wednesday.

NetScreen-5GT provides firewall and VPN protection plus brings added memory and CPU power to allow additional security functions, such as intrusion detection and Trend Micro's antivirus protection. Available now, the platform provides 75-Mbps firewall throughput and 20-Mbps 3DES VPN performance.

A software upgrade to add Trend Micro's antivirus protection to the appliance is expected to be available in the second half of this year, when a Trend Micro-branded version of the appliance with antivirus protection also is scheduled for release.

"NetScreen and Trend Micro are driving tighter integration of what had been considered separate fields of network security and antivirus and content security," said Robert Thomas, president and CEO of Sunnyvale, Calif.-based NetScreen, in a statement.

The vendors said they also will work together to integrate Trend Micro's technology into other NetScreen platforms, as well as research the acceleration of antivirus scanning and extend support for Trend Micro's Content Scanning Protocol (CSP) across other products from NetScreen and Cupertino, Calif.-based Trend Micro.
