Symantec Urges Collaboration

"We need to work together to start to build security in the application-design level at the beginning," Thompson said. "In doing so, we can create a way to manage the total environment and not just individual security applications."

Symantec, Cupertino, Calif., is backing up what Thompson called "a necessary shift in the approach to technology security" by introducing a new client-compliancy initiative and API aimed at enforcing remote- and mobile-client security policies.

When it comes to Symantec working with solution provider partners, however, the security vendor has to do a better job working with its smaller partners, said one solution provider with a base of small-business customers in the San Diego area.

"Over the last few years, when [Symantec] comes out with new products, it's usually about three months before I can get the OEM versions through my normal channels," said Bob Wexler, a principal at Wexler Consulting, San Diego.
