Mirapoint Intros Enhanced E-Mail Security Solution

The Full-Spectrum technology, which integrates spam analysis, identification, filtering and management features, resides on Mirapoint's integrated hardware and software appliances.

New features include heuristic rules-based scanning, which analyzes messages based on information in the e-mail header, envelope, subject and attachments and then scores the e-mail as spam or an acceptable e-mail.

"Using this scanning technique, we have been able to achieve a 96 percent effectiveness, which means less than 1 percent of e-mails are falsely identified as spam," said Jeff Brainard, senior product marketing manager at Mirapoint, Sunnyvale, Calif.

When an e-mail is identified as spam, administrators or the user can customize actions such as delete, block or send through as tagged.

Customers can also report spam to Mirapoint, which takes the spam characteristics and creates new spam rules that are automatically included in network-based updates.

Another feature is designed to meet increasing demand for managing outgoing e-mail, said Brainard.

"We're working with a hotel chain where spammers are renting rooms and using it as a point of origin," he said. "We now offer technology that analyzes outgoing traffic patterns to see spikes and block the spammer."

Another new feature is Denial of Service attack protection that monitors how quickly SMTP requests are issued from a single IP address and in turn automatically blocks or throttles back any address that exceeds a defined rate.

Mirapoint works with a range of solution providers and has joint-selling and joint-deployment programs.
