Xerox's new color-laser printer raises the bar for processing speed

Laser printers are the technology of choice for high-volume printing for monochrome and color uses. Though color-laser printing tasks usually take much longer than monochrome jobs, Xerox's new single-pass Phaser 6200, due out this week, eliminates the extra wait, the CRN Test Center found.
A typical color laser printer processes each color (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) in a separate pass, causing color printing to take four times longer than black-only printing. But the Phaser 6200's four separate lasers and imaging drums enable all colors to be processed simultaneously in one pass.
The Phaser 6200 prints up to 16 ppm in color or monochrome. Unlike most color-laser printers, the Phaser 6200 can still print in black and white even if a color toner runs out. That capability, coupled with a low $2,599 list price, make the Phaser 6200 a good substitute for a monochrome laser printer.
The Phaser 6200 prints at 2,400 x 600 dpi resolution and comes with a built-in 10/100 network-interlace card (except for the base model). Consumable parts are easily replaced, and there's no oil bottle. Toner cartridges come pre-installed, so the printer is ready to use out of the box.
While the Phaser 6200 doesn't take 11 x 17 paper, the product is compact and lightweight for a color laser printer, making it well-suited for the SMB market and businesses that lack IT staffs. Only one person is needed to set up the printer, which is easy for the average office worker to maintain. All consumables can be accessed from the front of the unit, preventing users from having to hunt for hidden access panels and enabling the printer to be positioned against a wall. All models have a 600-sheet paper tray.
The Phaser 6200's performance is top-notch. The printer wasn't available for the Test Center's March 4 review of compact color-laser printers, but in a recent test it vastly outperformed the other products. In part, the unit's sharp performance stemmed from its 500MHz Power PC processor. Good for high-volume printing, the printer is rated for a duty cycle of 60,000 pages per month.
