RSA Unveils Nightingale Technology

Dubbed Nightingale, the technology uses "secret splitting" to securely store data such as passwords, credit card numbers, and customer information, said John Worrall, RSA vice president of marketing and corporate development, said at a press luncheon here at the RSA Conference.

With Nightingale, data is cryptographically stored in two locations, the application server and the Nightingale server, he said.

Half of the secret protecting the data is stored on the application server and the other half is on the Nightingale server, which can be kept in a more secure facility, Worrall said. An intruder has to break into both servers in order to access the data.

"This provides a phenomenally higher level of security," he said.

Nightingale is slated to be available as a software development kit in the second quarter. Worrall said the company plans to incorporate the technology into its ClearTrust access management products as well as its overall new Nexus architecture.
