Pervasive Bolsters Database Security

Pervasive.SQL Version 8 Security, an enhancement to the core Pervasive database, offers a unified security model across all data-access methods. It also adds enhanced encryption for data transmission and storage, the company said.

Another component--Pervasive AuditMaster V. 6.0, which is based on technology acquired last spring from ThinkNet--will build audit trails and allow for close monitoring of database activity, tracing it back to named users, the company said.

AuditMaster "gives you ability to see who's out there editing your data [and] make changes. It will find a lot of use in accounting applications," said Bill Bach, president of Goldstar Software, a Flossmore, Ill., Pervasive partner.

And DataExchange V. 2.5 promises to add near-realtime data replication and synchronization.

Pervasive.SQL, which also includes a new-and-improved Btrieve module, is a quiet power, with many customers in banking, financial institutions, airlines, medical establishments and retail stores, industry observers said.

The overall security update is an "optional install, but I think everyone will do it. There are a lot of applications in the medical industry where people are anxious to meet HIPAA requirements or are otherwise worried about the security of their data and that's just about everyone" Bach said.

Pervasive.SQL 8 Security is due later this month and starts at $845 per client-server engine license. DataExchange 2.5 realtime backup is priced at $995 per workgroup server for up to three users, or $4,995 for enterpirse server engines. DataExchange synchronization will have "similar pricing," the company said.

AuditMaster 6.0 is shipping now at an introductory price of $1,495 per server till year's end. It requires Pervasive.SQL 8 running on Windows NT 4, 2000 or 2003.
