Symantec To Acquire Safeweb

Symantec, Cupertino, Calif., said it intends to offer Emeryville, Calif.-based Safeweb's Secure Extranet Appliance technology as a stand-alone offering on the Symantec appliance platforms in first-quarter 2004 and will integrate Safeweb's clientless VPN technology into the next version of Symantec Gateway Security Appliances also in 2004.

Safeweb's SSL VPN appliance allows solution providers to offer customers secure remote access to their networks and applications, without installing a client on end-user machines.

Last month, Symantec said it planned to close the acquisition of PowerQuest, a storage management software maker, by the end of 2003. Symantec plans to pay about $150 million for PowerQuest.

Orem, Utah-based PowerQuest makes products such as VolumeManager, PartitionMagic Professional and ServerMagic, which help large companies add new and reconfigure existing storage devices, and then monitor and manage them.
