McAfee Buys Citadel Security

Citadel, whose premier product is the Hercules Enterprise Vulnerability Management Suite, will lend to McAfee's total risk and vulnerability management strategies. McAfee was built on antivirus software, but in recent years has added network- and host-based intrusion prevention (through the Intruvert and Entercept acquisitions), vulnerability and risk management (Foundstone acquisition), network intrusion detection (Preventsys acquisition), as well as a host of other niche security technologies.

"Security risk management is emerging as one of our highest-growth opportunities. This acquisition will help us develop the next generation of real-world security risk management solutions that customers are demanding," said McAfee president Kevin Weiss in a statement. "With the addition of Citadel, we can offer our customers the major components of vulnerability assessment, policy compliance enforcement and remediation, building on our suite of existing products."

Security software remains one of the high growth opportunities for solution providers, according to VARBusiness research. In the Market Insight Report, a survey of more than 600 midmarket and enterprise IT decision makers, ensuring security and privacy ranked third in purchasing priorities for the coming year.
