Fortinet Monday introduced a host of new security appliances in an effort to expand its FortiGate family across a wider spectrum of mid-market and small businesses.

The network security vendor unveiled the FortiGate-1000C and FortiGate-600C mid-range unified threat management (UTM) appliances for midmarket customers, complimenting the FortiGate-300C appliance that was introduced in August. Fortinet said its strategy is to offer clients a wide range of security solutions that are flexible, depending on the customer size and need, and offer strong price/performance.

"The solution sets are so broad," said Kevin Flynn, Fortinet senior manager of product marketing. "We wanted to make sure we have the right set of products to cover the entire spectrum of client sizes and implementations."

The FortiGate appliance family combines firewall, VPN, intrusion prevention and application control technologies in a single box. The appliances are powered by the FortiASIC network processor, which uses an intelligent content scanning engine to speed up the network security services.

The FortiGate-1000C features 20 Gbps firewall support and comes with dual AC power supplies, and 128 GB onboard flash memory for WAN optimization. The appliance boasts a total of 24 ports, including two 10 GB SFP+ (enhanced small form-factor pluggable) ports. Both appliances house the FortiOS 4.3 security operating system, which is designed to provide firewall, intrusion prevention, anti-virus and anti-spyware protection, as well as VPN, web filtering, and data leakage prevention technologies. The FortiGate-600C andFortiGate-1000C will be released in the fourth quarter for $9,995 and $14,995, respectively.

Fortinet also introduced the FortiGate-20C , FortiWifi-20C, FortiGate-40C and FortiWifi-40C products for small businesses, remote offices and retail outlets. The FortiGate-20C UTM appliance features a 20 Mbps firewall, four LAN ports, one WAN port, and 2 GB of onboard flash memory. The FortiGate-40C, meanwhile, has 200 Mbps firewall support, five LAN ports, two WAN ports, and 4 GB of onboard flash memory.

The FortiWifi-20C and FortiWifi-40C security appliances provide addition wireless protection for FortiGate appliances. All four products will be released in the fourth quarter.
