RSA Extends Reach Of SecurID To Microsoft Cloud

While ADFS provides user name and password services, RSA's technology goes several steps further by adding another layer of user authentication by way of a hardware or software token that generates an identifying code every 60 seconds.

Microsoft has done the integration between SecurID and ADFS and will sell the combined technology through channel partners. "There's no additional work needed -- no professional services, nothing," said Karen Kiffney, senior manager of RSA product marketing. ADFS provides security to users accessing Office 365 cloud-based applications, such as Microsoft Exchange.

RSA, the security division of Bedford, Mass.-based EMC, also announced Monday that Citrix Systems has built SecurID support in its mobile software used to access a Citrix virtual desktop running on a corporate server. Citrix sells technology that lets companies deliver desktop applications from a central server to a thin-client office computer.

Starting in December, Citrix and channel partners will sell the mobile app Citrix Receiver with SecurID embedded. Citrix Receiver lets corporate employees access their desktop applications via smartphones or tablets from Apple or BlackBerry maker Research In Motion. The technology also supports Android smartphones and tablets.
