Sophos has released a new unified threat management (UTM) appliance that is purpose-built for the sub-100 market and is intended to provide the full range of IT security needed by most companies of this size.
Flagged as of the Sophos UTM 100 appliance with BasicGuard, the new offering provides a wide range of features and functionalities, including Web application control, network firewall, intrusion prevention, secure remote access, VPN, secure wireless, antivirus, anti-spam and URL filtering.
Designed with technology developed through last year's acquisition of Astaro, the appliance is aimed primarily at the 25 to 100 user space.
"You don't have to be a Fortune 100 company to be a target for the bad guys anymore," said Matt Fogelgren, director of channel sales at Boston-based Sophos. "Companies of all sizes and all industries are now being targeted. Those people have the same business challenges and risks, and we are bringing some of technologies that bigger companies would use towards the smaller end of the market."
Fogelgren added that the offering is also properly priced for the low end of the market, with the appliance and one-year license available at prices starting at $700.
"It has the right price performance aspect, has the right economics for this market segment," he said. "The capabilities are easier to manage, too. So we are not trying to add in a lot of functions that this particular customer set is not going to be able to leverage. Too often, smaller companies find themselves trying to use security technologies that were designed for larger companies, or they end up with gaps in their protection due to their size. Our objective is to close those vulnerabilities."
Fogelgren added that customers can leverage the features that best meet their needs and then extend their licenses as time goes on.
The product begins shipping immediately.
