Verdasys Adds Data Loss Prevention Support To Citrix ShareFile

Citrix ShareFile allows users to sync and share data from any device in a secure location. The new functionality gives Verdasys customers the ability to block data being sent to unapproved personal cloud storage locations or storage devices and redirect it to Citrix ShareFile.

"Enterprise customers are asking us for more advanced use cases where they want to track data in a public or private cloud and control what happens to data when it comes out of that environment," said Marcus Brown, vice president of business development at Verdasys. "We monitor the data going in and as it goes out and we're applying some of the same capabilities we apply at the endpoint."

Security experts say data loss prevention is growing in popularity, enabling enterprises to classify sensitive data and set policies to ensure that it is protected and not sent to unauthorized locations. DLP technology has been gaining traction following a number of data breach studies, including the Verizon Data Breach Investigation's Report, which concluded that employee error is a large cause of data leakage. Enterprises are trying to discover the data at the endpoint and control loss of sensitive information via portable drives and other removable media.

Verdasys sells an agent-based endpoint DLP platform and ties in encryption capabilities through Digital Guardian. The company partners with Fidelis for network DLP capabilities.

Verdasys is a great technology but, like many DLP platforms, few customers actually use its full capabilities, said Rich Mogull, analyst and CEO of security consultancy Securosis. Organizations deploying DLP are still getting a handle on roles-based administration to enforce policies on specific groups within the organization, Mogull said. They are using regular expressions, basic fingerprinting and keyword matching to protect structured data, such as credit card numbers and Social Security numbers, Mogull said.

Verdasys' Brown said the company's agents can run within a virtual desktop instance and monitor an entire virtual desktop session. The new Citrix capabilities add support for Citrix XenApp-delivered applications, XenDesktop virtual desktops as well as Windows desktop, laptops, servers and Apple iOS devices.

Verdasys has a hybrid sales model consisting of direct and channel sales.
