Sourcefire Names New CEO, Founder Remains On As CTO

The company Monday named John Becker as CEO. Becker served as CEO of ScienceLogic, a provider of network monitoring software. He also headed Approva Corp., a provider of continuous controls monitoring software.

Sourcefire makes intrusion detection and prevention systems. Roesch, who created the Snort open source intrusion prevention system that Sourcefire is based on, took over the leadership position when CEO John Burris retired due to health reasons. Burris died last October at his Annapolis, Md., home after battling colon cancer.

Roesch will continue as company CTO.

Becker has been an active member of the Sourcefire board of directors for several years, said Steven R. Polk, chairman of Sourcefire's board of directors. "The board is confident that John will be successful in leading the Company on the execution of its Agile Security vision," Polk said in a statement.

The company sells its IPS, firewall and FireAmp antimalware platform. Sourcefire introduced its Agile Security strategy advocating that its network security products help companies adapt quickly to dynamic attacks. Under the strategy, the company believes network monitoring coupled with security intelligence can make corporate networks more adaptable to the changing threat landscape, detecting and containing threats before they become a serious issue.
