Gateway Opens Door With Business Server, NAS Appliances

The Irvine, Calif.-based vendor's 9715 server is a high-density, 6U model with capacity for up to four Intel Xeon MP processors, 8 Mbytes of cache, 32 Gbytes of memory and 3 Tbytes of internal storage, said Mark Tanguay, senior manager for Gateway's server product marketing.

The server also has redundant, hot-swappable power supplies and fans, and hot-plug PCI slots and memory. It is suitable for running applications such as Oracle or SQL databases and multiple applications, he said.

Pricing for the 9715 with one 3.16GHz processor, 1 Mbyte of cache, a 36-Gbyte 15,000-rpm hard drive, 512 Mbytes of DDR-2 memory and a DVD drive starts at $3,395, which is about $3,000 less than Hewlett-Packard's DL580, Tanguay said.

Ross Skinner, CEO of S2 Business Solutions, a Scottsdale, Ariz., solution provider that has been working with Gateway for about eight years, said the 9715 shows Gateway's credibility in the business server space. "Gateway servers perform as well as HP, IBM or Dell," he said. "But they are cleaner—no proprietary components [and they are] easier to support."

Also new this week are Gateway's 9315 and 9415 storage servers. Both come in a 1U rack-mount enclosure with one or two Intel Xeon processors and up to 2 Gbytes of memory. The 9315 supports up to three hot-swappable SATA hard drives. The 9415 supports up to three SCSI hard drives. Both also connect to external storage devices via Ethernet or Fibre Channel networks.

The 9315 with 500 Gbytes of SATA NAS storage is priced at $2,097, while the 9415 with 72 Gbytes of SCSI NAS storage is $1,998.

"[At that price] you can connect these with servers to act as storage for such applications as e-mails," he said. "E-mail is growing out of control."
