Iron Mountain To Add Legato E-Mail Archiving To Its Outsourced Sources

Iron Mountain, based here, will officially unveil the alliance on Monday, said Margaret Rimmler, vice president of marketing for enterprise solutions and services at the company.

Hewlett-Packard unveiled a similar alliance with Legato this past Monday.

The goal of OEMing Legato's EmailXtender technology is to offer clients enhanced e-mail capturing to meet government regulatory and corporate governance regulations, said Rimmler. "We want to offer enhanced capture alternatives to grab e-mails and give customers ways to store them," she said.

Using EmailXtender, Iron Mountain customers will be able to set up rules that allow e-mails to be captured from specific users, or allow specific types of e-mails to be captured, said Rimmler.

For example, Securities and Exchange Commission regulations require that all e-mails, coming and going, be captured and archived, while enterprises can be more specific, Rimmler said. Therefore, a company could specify a rule that all human resources e-mails with the word "benefits" inside be captured and saved for seven years, she said.

The software also gives Web-based access to archived e-mails, she said.

Details about how EmailXtender will be integrated with Iron Mountain's Digital Archiving Services, which capture and archive all manner of data on an outsourced basis for customers, will be available this summer, said Rimmler.

With the exception of a few 8(a) solution providers--which are minority-owned or disadvantaged companies that earn the designation in order to be eligible to win work on federal contracts--Iron Mountain currently does not use solution providers to resell its Digital Archiving Services, Rimmler said.

However, she said the company does have an agent relationship with a number of companies such as Ikon Office Solutions, Malvern, Pa., and ImageMax, Fort Washington, Pa.

"With on-site capture using technology from Legato, we plan to evolve into using more systems integrators or similar resellers," Rimmler said.
