Novell, EMC Team On Corporate Backup Solution

On Tuesday, the two vendors announced the integration of Novell's iFolder technology with EMC's automated network storage systems, including the EMC Symmetrix and EMC Clariion arrays. The iFolder virtual file-access system allows users to securely access files from any browser and Web-enabled machine. It runs on all leading operating systems, including Novell NetWare, Windows NT/2000, Linux and Sun Microsystems' Solaris.

The joint backup solution is now available via Novell's and EMC's sales forces and channel partners.

The combination of iFolder and EMC's network storage technology will make it easier for end users to back up and retrieve critical data and documents from a PC or laptop via the Internet, according to Novell and EMC. In a statement, the two companies cited a 2002 SRC Research report showing that businesses rely on end users to back up their own data, and that more than 90 percent of business PCs are never backed up.
