Hewlett-Packard has launched a disk-based backup and recovery system for small and medium-sized businesses that provides data protection for up to four servers in a single, self-managing device.
The HP StorageWorks D2D Backup System, unveiled Monday, automates daily backups and stores data on the corporate network so it can be restored in minutes, HP said. The system, according to the computer maker, is at least half the cost of competing systems' list prices.
Better disaster recovery is a top priority among SMBs, according to IDC, making that area of storage management a target for HP and competitors.
The latest product is similar to the company's StorageWorks All-in-One Storage System, but trades features for a lower price and easy setup and installation. The new system features an iSCSI interface that plugs into a standard Ethernet network and has a setup wizard geared toward technical workers with no storage experience.
The new device reduces management costs associated with multiple direct-attached backup devices by consolidating backups onto a single system, HP said. The StorageWorks D2D Backup System is available now through HP or its resellers worldwide. Pricing starts at $2,000.
HP unveiled the beefier StorageWorks All-in-One Storage System last September, marking the company's first $5,000 NAS-iSCSI appliance for the small and medium-sized business market. In releasing the product, the company went head-to-head against other top storage vendors, such as EMC and Network Appliance, which are trying to reshape the SMB storage landscape.
