LaCie launched a pair of network-attached storage tools in its Big Network line, boosting performance, adding backup support options and bulking up capacity to a whopping 10 TB.
The Paris-based vendor on Tuesday updated the 2big Network and the 5big Network storage solutions.
The LaCie 5big uses a Gigabit Ethernet connection and features five hot-swappable drives that support seven RAID modes. LaCie Tuesday enhanced the 5big Network line, adding a bulked-up 10-TB model, making it the first in its class to hit double-digit capacity.
LaCie also strengthened its support for Apple applications, making the 5big Network compatible with Time Machine backup software. The company said that all Macs on a single LAN can now access the 5big Network and perform a variety of backups with one click on the LaCie Administrator Web site.
The 5big Network updates also add improved multimedia server capabilities, which let users play media from the NAS box through a UPnP-AV compatible device like a Sony PlayStation 3 or Xbox directly to a television or any DLNA multimedia device. The revamped 5big is also now compatible with iTunes server, which gives iTunes users access to the NAS device from the application interface.
"Networked storage has become a way of life for small businesses and a feature that's more commonly desired in the home," said Edin del Mar, LaCie's SOHO NAS product manager, in a statement. "The evolution of these two products provides our customers with enhanced convenience and usability, demonstrating LaCie's commitment to optimizing form and functionality."
Along with bulking up the 5big Network, LaCie updated the 2big Network, its two-bay RAID device that offers up to 4 TB of storage. The upgrades include new features such as Windows Active Directory Support (ADS) and local backup. It also now supports integration with MS Windows network domains, easing management for IT administrators.
For backup, the LaCie 2big Network now lets users perform incremental and scheduled backup to external devices and ships with client licenses of Genie Backup Manager Pro for Windows and Intego Backup Manager Pro for Mac, a software suite for document, e-mail and digital asset backup that can restore them in case of data loss. 2big Network is also fully compatible with Time Machine.
LaCie is selling the 2big Network and 5big Network through resellers, storage partners and its online store for $319.99 and $799.99 respectively.
