Avnet Technology Solutions on Thursday said it had reached an agreement to distribute Data Domain's inline deduplication storage systems. According to Avnet, the Data Domain products will be available to all Avnet resellers in the U.S. and Canada.
"Avnet's strengths as a distribution partner include their pedigree of expertise in the enterprise storage channel and their extensive range of solution offerings," said Beth White, vice president of marketing for Data Domain, in a statement. "With Avnet as a North American distribution partner, Data Domain can extend its reach into the enterprise and offer an increased level of resources to customers."
The Data Domain addition strengthens Avnet's storage business for VARs -- an area the distributor has continued to expand as of late. In May, Avnet debuted StoragePath, the fifth of its SolutionsPath programs, which offer VARs training in certain technology areas and vertical markets such as government and health care.
"Our distribution agreement with Data Domain opens the door for Avnet's partners to offer complete cross-platform storage solutions that lower backup costs and simplify data recovery," said Gavin Miller, vice president and general manager, Technology Infrastructure Solutions, Avnet Technology Solutions, Americas.
Data Domain, of course, was recently the subject of a much-publicized bidding war between EMC and NetApp -- a showdown that EMC ultimately won. EMC in a July 8 statement said the $2.1 billion acquisition of Data Domain was expected to close by the end of July. The acquisition gives EMC at least three different types of deduplication technology.
An Avnet spokesperson said Avnet would share more details once EMC completed its acquisition and made a formal announcement. Avnet has a long-standing distribution relationship with EMC, and was one of the first supporters of EMC's EMC Velocity channel partner program when the program was introduced in 2003.
