EMC has reshuffled its executive team, appointing a new chief information officer and moving the former CIO to focus on the storage vendor's new cloud and big data strategic program.

EMC on Monday said Vic Bhagat has joined EMC as its new CIO and is also serving as executive vice president for corporate services where he reports to Howard Elias, president and COO of EMC's global enterprise services.

Bhagat is now responsible for EMC's Information Technology, Global Centers of Excellence, Global Business Services, and Indirect Procurement organizations.

Bhagat joined EMC from Accenture, where he established that company's worldwide big data analytics practice for natural resources. Prior to Accenture, he spent 20 years at GE where he was the CIO for several GE organizations including GE Aviation Services, GE Global Growth and Operations, CNBC, GE Corporate, and GE India and Southeast Asia.

Bhagat is taking over from Sanjay Mirchandani, a seven-year EMC veteran who will support EMC's new Pivotal Initiative, as well as continue to support EMC's rapid growth market initiatives and interacting with customers, Elias said in a prepared statement.

EMC's Pivotal Initiative is a new organization formed by the combination of VMware's non-core technology for building platform-as-a-service (PaaS) offerings and EMC's big data technology.

Headed by Paul Maritz, who in July stepped down as VMware's CEO, the Pivotal Initiative is a separate organization focused on developing the infrastructure for transforming applications built on and using cloud, mobility and big data technology while allowing VMware to focus on continuing to develop software-defined data center technology.
