T-Mobile USA Monday became the first U.S. carrier to offer the BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220 smartphone from Research In Motion.

T-Mobile has an exclusive deal to carry RIM's Pearl Flip 8220, which is the first BlackBerry to come in the "flip" phone form factor so popular with U.S. users.

The phones are available now from T-Mobile retail stores, authorized dealers and the wireless carrier's Web site. Customers can get the device now in black. A red version is scheduled for availability in coming weeks, according to a statement from the two companies.

T-Mobile is offering the latest BlackBerry device for $149.99 after a $150 instant discount and $50 mail-in rebate. The suggested retail price is $349.99.

The Flip 8220 features a 2.4-inch diagonal screen at 320 x 240 pixels, 128 MB of flash memory and an included 256-MB microSD card.

The quad-band phone supports Wi-Fi and incorporates a 2.0-megapixel camera with digital zoom. It also offers video recording and playback, stereo Bluetooth support, an external memory card slot and a SureType keyboard.
