Dell is mining social networks to bring deeper discounts to potential customers who are active on Twitter. The Twitter handle @DellOutlet is currently offering a 20 percent discount on Latitude XT Tablet PCs.

The discounts, however, come on refurbished products. Following the link provided in the tweet, potential customers are brought to a Dell Outlet Twitter Exclusive offer page, where the computer manufacturer outlines the rest of the deal.

The refurbished products all come with the same limited hardware warranty and service. Dell also is offering a 21-day return policy.

Looking back through the previous tweets from @DellOutlet shows a number of other specials that have been offered from Dell. An Outlet XPS M1210 was being sold recently at a 30 percent discount; before that Outlet Inspiron and Studio PCs were being sold at 20 percent off.

The Twitter stream seems to be updated daily and offers potential customers a one-to-one interaction with a representative from Dell. Following the Twitter handle doesn't appear to be necessary to receive the discounts, although it will make it easier to find them.

What these streams really underscore are vendors' moves into the social networking and social marketing arena. In this case, Twitter offers Dell the opportunity for one-on-one interactions where they can solicit feedback from customers and take the temperature of the people who are considering purchasing one of their products.

The Latitude XT Tablet PC discount is currently ongoing but, if Dell's history with this stream is any indication, it will probably be changed in the next few days.
