Tandberg Data now is offering one of the smallest and most advanced tape drives on the market. The Tandberg 22LTO is half the size of typical drives, but with comparable capacity.
Test Center engineers placed this drive into a workstation and had it working in minutes. While it is ideal for desktops in budget-minded midsize businesses, it does not deprive customers of capacity. In fact, 22LTO is capable of storing 200 Gbytes of compressed data at a transfer rate of 115 Gbytes per hour.
The 22LTO relies on OEM-endorsed open standard Linear Tape Open (LTO) Ultrium. This technology is suitable for high-capacity storage rather than performance. The 22LTO backup drive uses the Ultrium Generation 1 technology, which can produce a 2:1 compression ratio on tape and boasts data transfer rates of 20 MBps to 40 MBps.
Tandberg is selling the 22LTO at an OEM price of just $1,000, a bargain for midsize businesses looking for enterprise-class backup drives. Unlike most competing backup technologies, Tandberg’s technology is scalable to 400-Gbyte native capacity, while maintaining high throughputs on larger drives. The company also offers a LTO capacity path all the way to 3.2 Tbytes.
As businesses grow, Tandberg’s wide LTO-based product selection can accommodate any storage needs at one of the lowest total cost of ownerships Test Center engineers have seen. Because the 22LTO cartridge has a small form factor, companies can save on long-term storage.
The 22LTO has a transfer rate of 16 MBps to 32 MBps with a 76-second file access time. The drive also runs cooler than most drives on the market. Tandberg states that the 22LTO’s unique head dissipation design allows it to have one of the lowest power consumption of all LTO drives.
The drive also has a locking technology to stop tape loading malfunctions when placing tapes into the drive. The heads have a capacity of 30,000 running hours.
