New Network Printers Can Share The Load

Oki Data Oki C7350n
Oki Data's Oki C7350n is a sixth-generation single-pass printer that uses LEDs instead of lasers to create an image. The resulting printouts look the same as those produced by traditional laser printers. The C7350n is targeted at small to midsize workgroups and costs $1,799.

The C7350n prints at speeds up to 24 ppm in color and up to 26 ppm in monochrome, at a resolution of 1,200 x 600 dpi. The first page is ready in 8 or 9 seconds, depending on whether it's monochrome or color. Standard memory is 192 Mbytes, and USB 2.0 connectivity is now featured along with parallel and Ethernet ports. The C7350n has a monthly duty cycle of 100,000 pages. The printer measures only 16.9 x 24.4 x 16.9 inches and weighs 105 pounds. Four toner cartridges and paper are all that must be installed before use.

The C7350n printed a 10-page monochrome Word document in just 34 seconds. The C7350n also printed a 10-page Word document with color headings in the same 34 seconds.

Oki Data separates partners into two levels of authorized resellers based on sales performance. Top-tier partners are eligible to participate in the Oki co-op program. Average margin is 15 percent. Comprehensive training, pre- and post-sales support are available to all partners.

Hewlett-Packard Business Inkjet 1200dtn
The HP Business Inkjet 1200dtn prints in monochrome at up to 28 ppm and in color at up to 24 ppm in draft mode. In best-quality mode, printing slows to 4 ppm in either color or monochrome. The 1200dtn model includes two paper trays for an input capacity of up to 400 sheets with standard automatic duplex printing and 32 Mbytes of memory. Recommended monthly duty cycle is 6,250 pages. The 1200dtn includes USB 2.0, bidirectional parallel and 10/100 ports for universal connectivity. It costs $299.

The HP Business Inkjet 1200dtn measures about 20 x 10.8 x 18.25 inches and weighs only 26.5 pounds. Setup is easy, since four print heads and four ink cartridges are all that must be installed. An initial automatic calibration phase takes about 7 minutes.

Unless closely scrutinized, the 1200dtn's printouts look like they were made by a laser printer. Print speed is reasonable--a 10-page Word document with or without color headings took 1 minute, 38 seconds to print. Two color graphics files took slightly more than 30 seconds each to print, with good contrast and detail but with a bit of visible banding.

HP's PartnerOne channel program includes customized marketing assistance and a wealth of compensation programs. The vendor customizes marketing assistance and support to fit the needs of each solution provider. Collateral tools, presentations and other sales and technical resources are available at the HP Partner Web site. HP printers offer roughly 8 percent solution provider margin.

Samsung ML-2251N
Some customers don't need to print in color at all but do need sharp-looking business correspondence. Samsung's ML-22551N is ideal for customers with strictly monochrome needs. The ML-22551N prints up to 20 ppm at a resolution of 1,200 x 1,200 dpi. It features USB 2.0, parallel and 10/100 Ethernet connectivity and measures just 11 x 14 x 18 inches. It weighs only 22 pounds. The tiny printer has a standard 250-sheet input tray and 50-sheet multipurpose tray. Memory is 16 Mbytes standard, upgradable to 144 Mbytes. It costs $299.

A 10-page Word document took about 38 seconds to print, fast enough for a single user or even a small workgroup. Resellers accustomed to setting up color laser printers will find this little printer refreshingly quick and simple; installing the single toner cartridge and paper takes just a couple of minutes.

Samsung's recently revamped, three-tier Power Partner program bases partner level on sales volume and market potential. Support elements vary among different levels, and include sales incentives, margin enhancement, co-op marketing and sales opportunities and sales support. The average solution provider margin is about 20 percent. Training is available both in person and over the Web. A special toll-free reseller support line is available weekdays during normal business hours, and toll-free technical support is available 24x7.
