Antec Gives PCs The Silent Treatment

Fortunately, Antec has a solution. Its new line of Phantom power supplies do not have cooling fans and therefore run silently. This is a tremendous breakthrough for business users and computer users in general, as they no longer have to put up with the noise.

The Phantom 350 is a 350-watt ATX-style power supply. Its fanless design ensures silent operation while its circuitry provides at least 85 percent efficiency at full load.

The increased efficiency of the system saves energy and reduces heat output. This, combined with the Phantom's extruded aluminum casing—which is attached to internal heatsinks—eliminates the need for cooling fans. The technology is pricey, however. The Phantom 350 has a list price of $199 and a street price of between $133 and $166.

Along with its fanless design, the Phantom 350 has dedicated output circuits for each voltage and voltage-feedback circuitry to ensure maximum system stability. The power supply features two Serial ATA connectors to power SATA drives. The power connector leads detach from the power supply. System builders can reduce clutter within a case by only attaching the necessary leads.

The power supply also features over-temperature, over-voltage, over-current, over-power, short-circuit and under-voltage protection, along with gold-plated connectors for superior conductivity and resistance to corrosion. The Phantom 350 is ATX12V v2.0-compliant and is compatible with all new motherboards. The unit is rated for a mean time between failure (MTBF) of 80,000 hours and is protected by a three-year warranty.
