For employees in sales, field service and related fields who spend significant amounts of time traveling, reliable hands-free communication is an important capability. Cardo Systems makes the process easy with its scala-500 headset.

The scala-500 is based on Bluetooth technology and communicates directly with Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones. The unit also includes an adapter that provides the same capability to phones lacking Bluetooth technology. The unit's main receiver can be worn via an included ear loop or eyeglass attachment. The device includes echo canceling technology, a directional microphone and proprietary wind-blocking technology.

CRN Test Center engineers tested the scala-500 with a non-Bluetooth Nokia cell phone. Engineers plugged the Bluetooth adapter's cables into the phone and secured it to the back of the phone via an included piece of Velcro and adhesive. The adapter caused interference with phone calls while secured to the phone because it blocked the antenna. When it was removed from the back of the phone but still attached via its cables, reception was clear.

A power charger is included for charging the adapter and earpiece. Charging takes two to four hours and provides up to nine hours of use.
