Big LCDs Can Mean Big Business For Solution Providers

For instance, CRTs don't have fixed native resolutions and they respond to video signals faster than LCDs, which makes them ideal for high-end graphics, photo retouching, gaming and entertainment applications. But flat-panel displays are in high demand because of the range of sizes available, and their portability and space-saving features. Many corporate offices are moving to large-format LCDs because they are thin and light and offer a huge viewing area that can help increase worker productivity. LCDs in the 32-inch range are often used as electronic signage to advertise a business or services.

LCDs are also more profitable for resellers than CRTs, especially for solution providers selling the larger units.

The CRN Test Center took a look at three different types of large-format LCDs from BenQ, Samsung and Syntax to see where they are best used.

BENQ WUXGA FP231W
Wide-screen LCD displays are a must-HAVE for SOLUTION PROVIDERS selling media center PCs. LCDs are perfect for publishing, graphic design, CAD/CAM and engineering, not to mention dazzling multimedia production. BenQ's WUXGA FP231W 23-inch wide-screen display, with a native resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 pixels, is perfect for these applications. The FP231W has a 16:10 aspect ratio, a viewing angle of 176 degrees both vertically and horizontally, and a built-in four-port USB 2.0 hub. Its height-adjustable base tilts and swivels. Inputs include VGA, DVI, S-Video and composite video. A picture-in-picture function lets users view data from two input sources simultaneously. Speakers are optional. The display measures 21.1 x 18.3 x 9.8 inches and weighs about 20 pounds. The FP231W costs $1,799.

SAMSUNG SYNCMASTER 213T
The best way to save space in a cramped office or cubicle is to replace users' large, clunky CRT displays with large flat-panel displays. For most business uses, Samsung's SyncMaster 213T is a good choice. The display has a 21.3-inch screen with a native resolution of 1,600 x 1,200 and costs $899.

The SyncMaster 213T is a dual-input analog/digital LCD display with VGA and DVI inputs. It has a contrast ratio of 500:1, an extra-wide viewing angle of 170 degrees both vertically and horizontally, and a response time of 25 milliseconds. The pivoting base allows for both landscape and portrait modes and can be mounted on a wall. The display measures 18.6 x 18 x 8.7 inches and weighs 11.2 pounds.

Samsung's Power Partner program includes three levels based on partners' sales revenue and marketing potential. Benefits include a sales incentive fund, rewards programs, product rebates, bidding assistance, sales and marketing collateral, sales and technical training, and a toll-free reseller support hot line. The average reseller margin is 15 percent.

SYNTAX OLEVIA LT32HV
For presentations, corporate boardrooms, waiting rooms and lounges, a much larger display is needed, like the Syntax Olevia LT32HV. This 32-inch wide-screen display is too big for desktop use, and resolution is too coarse for close-up viewing. But it's ideal for viewing from a distance and can be wall-mounted for presentations or as electronic signage.

The LT32HV has two composite video inputs, three S-Video inputs, one DVI input, one VGA input and a cable TV input with a built-in TV tuner and picture-in-picture function. It has a native WXGA resolution of 1,366 x 768 and a true HDTV aspect ratio of 16:9. Image-enhancement features include a 1,200:1 contrast ratio, a 178-degree viewing angle both horizontally and vertically, a digital YC 3D comb filter, progressive scan with 2:2/3:2 pull down and digital noise reduction. Built-in 15-watt stereo speakers provide ample sound. The unit costs $1,999.

The LT32HV measures 39.8 x 22 x 11.1 inches and weighs 55 pounds. Syntax provides sales and marketing collateral, co-op advertising and promotional opportunities. On-site training and telephone support are also provided.
