KeySpan USB Server

For small businesses, SOHOs and other environments that want to easily share hardware resources, Keyspan's USB Server allows all PCs on a LAN to jointly use the same USB printers, scanners and other USB devices. The USB server can support up to 4 devices, and transmits data at 12 Mbps. The device uses USB 1.1 technology, and the company said it will release a USB 2.0 version in the next twelve months. One minor drawback is that the server does not support simultaneous access to devices. The server can connect to a wired or wireless network using its RJ45 connector, and supports DHCP, static addressing and Apple's Rendezvous for remote administration. Minimum system requirements are Windows 2000 or XP or Mac OS X.2.

ViewSonic Tablet PC V1250

After several years of selling slate-style Tablet PCs, ViewSonic recently unveiled its first convertible Tablet PC, the V1250. The V1250 is a well-built unit, and includes a 12.1-inch screen, Intel Pentium M 1GHz processor, 256 MByte of memory (expandable to 768 MByte) and a 30 GByte hard drive with shock protection. Connectivity is provided by a 802.11b wireless radio, 56 Kbps V.90 modem, two USB 2.0 ports and a full-size Firewire port. The Tablet PC weighs 3.9 pounds, which is a bit heavy for a mobile device. A drive for Secure Digital media is included and a ledge protruding from the V1250's base includes a useful scroll wheel. Buttons on the ledge and on the side of the tablet's screen can be programmed to control various functions, and are preset to control screen rotation, turn on and off the wireless radio, reload web pages, etc.

QuickPAD Pro - Mail

The QuickPAD is an easy-to-use computer for simple note-taking and e-mail needs. The device weighs only two pounds, offers password protection and includes a wide variety of applications including a word processor with spell check tool, database program, graphing calculator and personal organizer. Files can be transferred to a PC via the QuickPAD's USB, RS232 or IR port, and the device contains a 56K modem to allow it to connect to most ISPs. The QuickPAD runs on four AA batteries, with up to 100 hours of battery life. The product is aimed at markets such as education, where several students can share a single computer to learn basic computer skills, and healthcare, where users can carry the QuickPAD from location to location for note taking and data input.
