Review: More Wattage Than Ever Before

power supply memory file

Backed by a five-year warranty, Corsair's HX Series includes a 520-watt CMPSU-520HX and a 620-watt CMPSU-620HX. For comparison purposes, a commodity PC typically contains a flimsy 200-watt power supply; aftermarket power supplies typically are rated at 300 or 400 watts.

Any good power supply starts with quality components. The CMPSU-620HX contains 105-degree Celsius industrial-grade capacitors, which far outlast those used in conventional power supplies. A thermally controlled double ball-bearing 120mm fan delivers plenty of air flow but with low noise because the fan's RPM varies according to temperature. The power supply also contains triple +12-volt rails with a combined current output rating of 50 amps. Power sharing between the triple rails prevents problems in the event of an overload on any single rail. The CMPSU-620HX offers better than 80 percent efficiency so minimal heat is generated during operation. It also features overcurrent, overvoltage and overpower protection; undervoltage protection; and short-circuit protection.

Corsair's HX Series power supplies feature an enhanced modular cable solution, whereby the peripheral leads plug into the power supply using special connectors. This way, system builders can use only the cables that are needed, which reduces clutter inside the case while improving airflow concurrently for better cooling. Connectors are gold-plated for superior conductivity and resistance to oxidation.

In summation, Corsair's HX620W is ideal for use in mission-critical systems where the use of commodity power supplies is just too risky.
