Software-Free Encryption

One reasonable solution system builders can incorporate into their systems during rollouts or as an add-on sale for securing sensitive data is Addonics&' Saturn Cipher Mobile Rack Kit.

The hardware-based hard drive encryption solution is easy to deploy and requires no additional software to provide 64-bit DES/TDES data encryption. Integrators can set up the chassis in either of two ways: by inserting the physical kit into a PC&'s drive bay or by setting it up as an external hard drive, attached to a PC or laptop, connected via a USB 2.0 interface cable.

Data is then encrypted and decrypted by an engine that encrypts everything on the hard drive. This type of hardware encryption eliminates the possibility of hackers analyzing any useful patterns.

A standout feature of the Addonics solution is that integrators can encrypt as many drives as they want with whatever capacity they wish—and as often as they want. This will be extremely useful for businesses that are running legacy systems across multiple platforms.

For testing purposes, CRN Test Center engineers set up Addonics&' 64-bit version SATA hard disk drive enclosure, model number SCSAUSCS64. A SATA HDD was dropped inside the drive enclosure, which is sized at 5.25 inches and can be opened and closed with one simple screw.

Test Center engineers first had to partition and format a Seagate 250-Gbyte Barracuda drive before any data or encryption could be applied to the drive. Both power and data connections from the enclosure&'s motherboard and power supply are married to the back of the drive cradle instead of to the drive itself. This makes hard drive removal and installation much easier. Setup was accomplished in minutes, and no problems arose throughout the entire installation process.
