RSA Conference Displays Security Sector's Breadth

Announcements for new products, pricing, and upgrades made at this week's RSA Conference showcase a variety of technologies all trying to solve an even wider range of security concerns. Even though the security sector has been front and center for the past 18 months, there is no "killer app" that will solve all the needs of a user--whether individual, small business or enterprise. With networks becoming broader and more open and a new class of cyber criminals apparently on the rise, staying one step ahead of security problems will be a never-ending quest.

The unusually active conference saw several dozen announcements made, all of which collectively exemplify the scattershot approach vendors, resellers, and end-users must take to protect their networks against intruders and viruses. Among the highlights:

New products:

Waveset Technologies announced the Lighthouse Enterprise Edition, a management infrastructure for federated identities.

Corrent released the S3500 multi-gigabit VPN Firewall PCI Card.

Brience released its Secure Collaboration Gateway remote access software.

Wedgetail announced Java Crypto and Security Implementation Single Sign-On, the first in a series of products designed to integrate Microsoft and Java security technology.

Business Layers demonstrated its solution for XML-based identity management.

Finjan Software and Mailshell announced the integration of Mailshell's SpamCatcher engine into Finjan's SurfinGate for e-mail.

Swivel Technologies introduced the M2F authentification system for use on mobile phones and PDAs.

Guardent unveiled its Business Protection Service, which uses a holistic approach to protect network architectures.

Internet Security Systems launched its Proventia family of network protection appliances.

Nokia released the SC6000 content security appliance for large enterprises.

RSA Security unveiled its BSAFE Secure-WS software and Nightingale, a "secret splitting" e-security application.

Novell shipped the early access release of the Libertyidentity provider for its eDirectory.

Pointsec Mobile Technologies launched the version 2.0 of its PocketPC encryption application.

Sophos released the next version of its MailMonitor tools for Microsoft Exchange 2000 and Lotus/Domino servers.

Rainbow Technologies announced NetSwift iGate 2.2, an authentication tool for web-based applications.

Zone Labs announced ZoneAlarm Pro 4.0, a tool that can be tailored to each user's skill and access level.

IM Logic released IM Manager 5.0, an enterprise class solution for securing and controlling corporate IM.

Lancope announced StealthWatch 3.0, a behavior-based intrustion detection system.

Partner Programs:

Neoteris said it will leverage its Instant Virtual Extranet secure remote access products in a partnership with Netegrity's authentication and access management software.

RapidStream announced a new Enterprise Security Program, an incentive and promotional program for North American enterprise VARs.

RSA Security and SCM Microsystems signed an OEM and collaboration agreement to integrate and market SCM's smart card readers and RSA's Smart Badging solution.

VeriSign announced its Enterprise Partner Program, a testing an co-marketing venture that will allow ISVs, systems integrators, and VARs to deliver more tightly integrated security solutions.
