In a modern amalgam of a sci-tech and Hollywood slasher, Diane Lane's FBI agent character is assigned to hunt down a serial killer who posts videos of his victims' mutilations online.
Many experts laud this film for its technical accuracy, particularly with its realistic portrayal of fast flux botnets. But here's the thing -- almost nothing on the Internet is untraceable. In fact, anything with an IP address can in fact be traced. Experts say that there still has to be a provider, and subsequently, some kind of record.
"If it's the Internet, it's got an IP address," said Salchow. "The way they deal with it is call the people at CSI. They can look up your IP address from any connection, and then they tell you the actual address."
We'd like to think that if a serial killer was torturing and mutilating victims online, some law enforcement agency would step up to the plate just a little.
