Many have seen this film, starring Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman and Will Smith. In a nutshell, space aliens come in hordes from outer space at the beginning of July and try to destroy civilized life as we know it, for a reason that's not entirely clear. They move on to area 51, where a handful of individuals then try to save the world from total annihilation. But there are a lot of really cool explosions and the U.S. Capitol gets blown up.
However, perhaps not surprisingly, this film contains one of the biggest technical Hollywood blunders of all time. In a last gasp effort to deter the aliens from their hostile takeover, Goldblum's character uploads a computer virus on a Mac and delivers it to the invading alien's computer network, which of course destroys their entire system.
Wow. Who knew that computer networks on alien spaceships were Mac compatible? And you'd think that while the aliens were sophisticated enough to travel hundreds of thousands of light years across the universe, they might have invested a little more into their comprehensive security strategy.
"That's completely insane," said David Perry, global director of education for Trend Micro. "What are they going to do? Call tech support and reboot the spacecraft?"
