Xerox Rolls Out Two New Phasers For Less Than $600

Well, maybe not gold, but by spending $600 and less, SMBs can save a small fortune on costs, such as by printing marketing materials in-house by using the Phaser 6128 MFP (left) or Phaser 6280, Xerox pointed out.

"Businesses of all sizes are recognizing that professional-looking color documents leave a positive, lasting impression with customers leading to new business opportunities," said Rick Dastin, president, Global Products Delivery Group. "Color in the office is no longer a luxury, it's affordable and necessary to stand out in these challenging economic times."

The new products could also help change Xerox's reputation as an expensive vendor, said Mark Szalkiewicz, senior account manager, Horizon Computers, a San Diego-based Xerox reseller.

"These printers open up a whole lot of places that Xerox wouldn't have gotten into before, even an office with only three to five employees," he said. "The printers put a quality product in the hands of anyone."

The 6128 MFP (left), has a large, intuitive front panel, and copies, scans and faxes and prints up to 12 pages per minute (ppm) in color and 16 ppm in black and white; first time page out is 17 seconds for color and 14 seconds for black and white. Other features include scan-to-e-mail that sends e-mail via a variety of networks, and a LAN fax, which sends faxes directly from the computer.

Users can also load paper less often since the main paper tray holds 250 sheets. Built-in networking tools connect the printer to all employees on the network, regardless of platform, or it can be directly connected via USB. The 6128 also can be installed with premium Xerox management tools, such as CentreWare Internet Services, which lets users set up and manage printers from user PCs.

Because toner accounts for most printing costs, the 6128 has a nice feature that tracks costs to see if color is being used appropriately. And if you happen to run out of color toner, the MFP's Run Black feature lets users continue printing with black until color toner is replaced.

The 6128 MFP has a street price of $599.

The Phaser 6280 (left) replaces the 6180 as a single-function desktop printer, and is primarily intended to produce graphic arts-quality marketing materials for small businesses. The paper tray holds 950 sheets, and print time is 26 ppm for color, 31 ppm for black and white and 10 seconds for the first page out. The 6280 also has 256 MB of printer memory, a 400MHz processor and built-in networking and on-board support for Windows, Mac and Linux.

The 6280 (left) features various tools to help manage color, including True Adobe PostScript3 and 600 x 600 x 4 dpi that delivers 16 shades of color per pixel. The 6280 also features a toner gauge that lets users check levels before starting a large print job. The Xerox EA-HG toner used in the printer has smaller, more uniform toner particles than conventional toner for more clarity. In addition, by using the Pantone Color-approved solid-color simulations with Xerox color-correction technology, the Phaser 6280 automatically prints the right colors or lets users fine-tune them for special applications.

The 6280 starts at $549.
