VAR500 Roundup: CDW Gets Kudos, ACS Wins Management Contract, And More

VAR500 Roundup: ACS, CDW, GlassHouse And Wipro In The Mix

There was no rest last week for the hard working solution provider firms on our VAR500 list. ACS showed it can manage more than paper documents, CDW and GlassHouse were recognized for their achievements, and Wipro invested in women of the channel.

GlassHouse CEO Honored

GlassHouse Technologies' (2010 VAR500 rank: 21) CEO Mark Shirman, (left), received the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2010 Award in New England. The award recognizes outstanding entrepreneurs who are building and leading dynamic, growing businesses. Shirman was selected by an independent panel of judges, and the award was presented at an event at the Boston Renaissance Waterfront Hotel.

Wipro Funds Women Tech Continuing Ed

Wipro Technologies (2010 VAR500 rank: 26) has teamed up with the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) to fund women students attending research conferences worldwide. ACM will select 20 students each year for individual awards from $600 to $1,200 depending on distance to conference venues.

"We are funding the ACM scholarship [program] to bring more women into science and technology and create better solutions to complex issues that make a difference in improving living standards the world over," Wipro chief technology officer I. Vijaya Kumar, (left), said in a statement.

ACS Manages Red-Light Program

Dallas-based Affiliated Computer Services (2010 VAR500 rank: 21), a Xerox company, is in the traffic management business, as well as the print management business.

Most recently, ACS is installing and monitoring the cameras in Suffolk County, N.Y., in an arrangement the county said is aimed at making streets safer and that could generate roughly $6 million in annual revenue. A spokesman for the county said ACS will be compensated through a revenue-sharing agreement. The county installed its first such camera the last week in June and is installing or seeking permits for 20 more in a plan to set up cameras at 50 corners.

Red light cameras are going up nationwide, but they've been under scrutiny by drivers' groups. For example, ACS in 2008 was sued for acting as if it were a law enforcement authority. To avoid legal battles, after ACS reviews footage, the Suffolk County Attorney’s office reviews the data before citations are issued.
