LinkedIn, which clocked in at No. 78 in the Top 100, is a ranking newcomer.

The social networking site, which is aimed at professionals, has grown to more than 300 million members across the globe. And the company's now got its sights on China, where it launched a Chinese-language site this year as it seeks to make good on an a longer-term goal of becoming a global networking site. LinkedIn has about 4 million members in China.

The company's also been on a tear with acquisitions, which have totaled nine since 2010, as it seeks to make good on its growth goal.

The company paid roughly $90 million for newsfeed app Pulse last year. That was followed by February's $120 million purchase of Bright, which links job seekers with employers.
