Facebook made a serious foray into the mobile payment space with the hiring of former PayPal President David Marcus to head up the social media company's Facebook Messenger. Partners said the hiring move was a significant one for Facebook, showing the company recognized the importance of the mobile payment industry, a trend they expect to hit the channel soon. Marcus was president of PayPal's board of directors for two years it bought Zong, the mobile payments company Marcus founded and headed up as CEO. Marcus said he made the move to Facebook after founder Mark Zuckerberg presented a "compelling vision about mobile messaging" and a desire to work on a product from the ground up.
