The Evolution Of The Smartphone In 7 Releases

Nokia 9000 Communicator (1996)

Nokia today isn't seen as a particularly innovative company, but there was a time when the Finnish mobile device maker pushed the envelope. For example, the Nokia 9000 Communicator was the first smartphone to feature a full QWERTY keyboard; it was also one of the first phones -- if not THE first -- with a Web browser. But the innovation came at a price: The device was bulky and heavy (14 ounces). Still, the clamshell design and physical keyboard coupled with a 640-x-200 monochrome display was a winner, at least for a little while. It lacked a touchscreen like IBM's Simon, but the smartphone features included email, calendar, contacts and notepad widgets (there was a fax button, too). The Nokia 9000 Communicator may have been bulky, but it was a star.
