Top 10 Best-Selling Notebooks By Brand

Best Sellers

A half-way point between the traditional desktop and a more mobile tablet, notebooks are a good solution for those looking for the best of both worlds. According to an April 2013 report by The NPD Group, a Port Washington, N.Y.-based market sales research company, backed by statistics tracked by St. Petersburg, Fla.-based IT sales tracking company the Global Technology Distribution Council, here is a "Top 10" breakdown of the best-selling notebooks for April.

10. Sony

Tenth place in best-selling notebook brands for the month of April was Sony, dropping 1.1 dollar shares from the previous April. Sony's VAIO lineup consists of four notebooks, all sporting Intel i7 Core processors ranging from 1.7 to 2.2GHz. The Windows 8 devices can be purchased in a variety of sizes, from 11.6- to 15.5-inch displays. Though April did not bring any earth shattering news from Sony on the notebook front, the Windows 8 notebooks may be gaining the company some traction.

9. Dell

With 14- and 15.6-inch display options, Dell's Inspiron 15R (pictured) and Latitude E4530 notebook lines bring the company to No. 9 on the best-selling notebook brand list. The Inspiron 15R comes with either a 1.9GHz Intel i3 processor or a 2.7GHz Intel i5 processor. The 14-inch Latitude E5430 sports a 2.4GHz Intel i3 processor. All notebooks come loaded with either Windows 7 or Windows 8.

8. Toshiba

Toshiba's notebook lineup is broad, with several series ranging in size, performance and overall specs. The low end of the spectrum is the C Series Satellite notebook, starting at $298.99 with a 15.6-inch screen and a choice of Intel or AMD processor. At the upper end, a 17-inch Toshiba Kirabook with an i7 Intel Core processor can ring up at $1,999.99. The wide range of budget to high-performing notebooks brings Toshiba to the No. 8 slot on best-selling notebook brands list for the month of April.

7. Acer

Holding nearly steady in dollar share from the previous year, Acer slipped only 0.1 dollar share from April 2012 to April 2013. The three notebook series offered by Acer include the Aspire R notebook, designed for touch; the Aspire V3, geared toward gaming and entertainment; and the Aspire E, for everyday use and business production. The notebooks come with either an Intel or AMD processor, depending on the model, and have displays that range from 14 to 17.3 inches.

6. Samsung

Though Samsung is No. 6 on the best-selling notebook brand list, the company boasts the No. 1 best-selling notebook over all for the month of April: the 11.6-inch Chromebook. The Chromebook has a 1.7GHz Samsung Exynos 5 dual-core processor and holds over six hours of battery life. As eight of the 10 brands found on this list sunk in dollar share from the previous April, Samsung improved a full 5.7 dollar shares.

5. Asus

Another brand that sold well but did not have a single model stand out enough to make the top 10 notebook product list for the month of April was Asus. For everyday computing, Asus' 10.1-inch 1015E, 15.6-inch X550CA and 17.3-inch X75A are all equipped with Intel processors and come loaded with either Windows 7 or Windows 8. Asus also sports a line of gaming notebooks, multimedia notebooks, and now, several convertible notebooks with touch capability for Windows 8. Asus was one of two brands on this list of 10 to rise in dollar share from the previous year, improving 3.4 points.

4. Panasonic

Though Panasonic did not have a place holder on the top 10 best-selling notebook models, it holds a strong fourth place on the best-selling brand list for the month of April. Panasonic brings a line of "Toughbooks" to the notebook market. Each Toughbook looks bulkier and feels heavier than the typical notebook, but Toughbooks are able to withstand being dropped from several feet without being harmed. The rugged line is split into three "toughness" categories: Fully Rugged, Semi-Rugged and Business Rugged.

3. Apple

Apple held three of the best-selling notebook models on the top 10 list and clocks in at No. 3 on the best-selling brand list for the month of April. The MacBook Pro with a 2.5GHz Intel i5 Core processor and 13.3-inch display was the No. 2 best-selling notebook over all for the month. The 15.4-inch MacBook Pro with a 2.7GHz Intel i5 processor and the 13.3-inch MacBook Pro with a 2.9 GHz Intel i7 processor were the seventh and eighth best-selling notebook models for the month. Both 13.3-inch models run on OS 10.7, while the 15.4-inch model runs OS 10.8.

2. Lenovo

With 24.1 dollar shares, down only 0.8 from the previous year, Lenovo held over double the dollar shares of the third-place notebook best-selling brand, Apple. Though none of Lenovo's specific models made it in the top 10 best-selling notebook product list, it had an impressive and broad array of notebook options in the ThinkPad and IdeaPad lineups. As Chris Frey, vice president for Lenovo's North America Commercial Channel and SMP, said: "We believe it is important to have offerings around all kinds of different form factors."

1. Hewlett-Packard

HP was the No. 1 selling brand for notebooks in the month of April, holding six of the top-10 best-selling notebook model numbers. HP's most popular notebook sold was the EliteBook 9470m with a 1.8GHz Intel i5 processor. The ProBook 4540 line held three of the best-selling product slots for the month as well. Each model in the ProBook 4540 line up has a 15.6-inch display and ranges from 2.4 to 2.5GHz Intel i3 and i5 processors. The ProBook 6570b notebook with a 2.5GHz Intel i5 processor was the 10th best-selling notebook on the market in April.
