Cisco-VMware Rift Widens
Judging by the recent investments Cisco and VMware have made in technologies like cloud and SDN, it's likely the rift partners see between these two tech giants will only continue to widen in 2014.
The battle for SDN supremacy between Cisco and VMware -- which together with EMC form the joint converged infrastructure coalition VCE -- heated up significant in 2013.
For starters, when VMware launched its flagship SDN and network virtualization platform NSX, Cisco was notably absent from the list of VMware technology partners supporting the product. Then, when Cisco came to market with its Application-Centric Infrastructure (ACI) for SDN, the networking giant was quick to point out why it thinks ACI has a leg up over VMware's NSX.
Assuming that the SDN market continues to grow -- which, by most industry watchers' expectations, it will -- then it's safe to assume that so, too, will the VMware-Cisco divide.
