A Look Back At 12 Twitter Attacks

Twitter Under Attack

On the morning of Aug. 6 Twitter founder Biz Stone alerted users in a blog post (image sent by Trend Micro) that Twitter had been hit with a massive distributed denial of service (DDOS) attack that left more than 45 million users without access to the service for hours. Hackers executed the attack by sending millions of junk spam tweets, which ultimately crashed the system. This particular attack likely generated so much publicity because it affected all of its users at once.

However, researchers say that Twitter's skyrocketing popularity has made it a target for malware authors, phishers and spammers alike. In short, this wasn't the first attack and it certainly won't be the last. Here are few examples of how spammers and attackers have pummeled the microblogging phenomenon.
